Don’t overwork yourself, WFH Mums

Before the start of the Circuit Breaker, I was enjoying the new found flexibility of working from home. It was always my dream combination of staying at home 24/7 with the children and still able to contribute to the economy. I appreciated the time saved in commuting, daily breakfast with mum and the flexi-hours to steal in a nap before lunch. Most of all, I am very happy to be there to welcome the children home from school and at the dining table to ask them about their day while they chatter the fresh memory of happenings in between mouthfuls of noodles. In the evening, I shut down the computer and bring the youngest to the playground and enjoy the neighbourhood children’s laughter as they run haphazardly chasing each other like random particles movement in a volatile state.

When the Circuit Breaker started, all of us stayed home and the nation stayed home. All outdoor activities came to a standstill. We tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle and mental health in the house the way everyone was doing: youtube exercises, family bonding through games, home-cooked food, Netflix and all. It brought an opportunity to spend time with people we love. It was almost perfect. The only flaw was that work and life blended and blurred the lines.

When work got busier, and not needing to ‘pack up and go home’, I find that I stretched the working time bit by bit and into dinner time. Night meetings took over after the kids sleep, sometimes they started before bedtime. No matter how late I worked the night before, I would have to wake up at 6am to prep the kids to school. Very soon, fatigue latched on to me and my immunity was low. It was not a healthy life anymore. Time spent with children became lesser. This is not what I want. How do I get back my life?

I gave myself some time to sort out work till end of 2020 and took a slightly long break into the new year. Transitioning to 2021 was a perfect excuse for me to renew determination, refresh resolutions and start new habits. That’s exactly what I did.

It helped that the kids are back in school and I resumed my morning walks. I was determined to get back into good health. The morning breeze, beautiful scenery and loosening of tight muscles displaced the negativity that comes with fatigue. If you ask me, I wouldn’t exchange this for an extra hour of sleep.

At work, I did some changes too. I decline unnecessary meetings especially late night meetings that I could view the recordings. I delegated more and suppressed the guilt of doing so. I try to be more FOCUS and am still learning to say “No” to things that stretch my bandwidth too much.

What really got me determined in prioritizing my life over work is knowing that no one at work except myself will prioritize my health, my family time, my well-being, my happiness. Work is endless and the company will continue to run well with or without me sacrificing personal time. But my family and I will suffer if I don’t take good care of my health.

With the lesser time that I wish to put into work compared to last year’s overstretch, this will bring me more into focus. I still work late nights when I have to, but I am now more mindful of not overworking and taking breaks or even a lunch time nap if I need to. I love working from home and also love the interaction with colleagues at work. In the next few months, I hope the Covid situation in Singapore will be even better so that we can have a blended work arrangement for the best of both worlds.

I hope you have been following my slimming journey with Halley Medical Aesthetics. If not, you can scroll to the bottom of this post to read all the posts on CoolSculpting and Active Slim Program which has helped me to sculpt slimmer thighs, reduce weight and get back my confidence.

Active Slim Program provides nutritional counseling and adds on meal replacement for healthy weight loss. I learnt the right ways to cut down my excessive weight to a healthy BMI, all thanks to Jean Tong, my nutritionist at Halley Medical Aesthetic.

So far my statistics have been satisfying. From the first visit to the last, below are some encouraging numbers, nothing drastic but steady and healthy numbers:

● Weight – reduce by 3kg over 6 months (without medication)
● Muscle weight – increase by 0.8%
● Body Fat – reduce by 3%
● Waistline – reduce 7cm

One may expect that weight loss is the obvious indicator of slimming success, but it would be more accurate to take in the holistic numbers like muscle weight, body fat and final BMI. In fact, from Active Slim program, my waistline actually decreases by a whopping 7cm, which I think is really amazing! I am happy that muscle weight has increased, body fat has decreased and hence I am not so bothered about my final weight. The truth is that my target weight falls short of 1 kg. However, 4 months after the program has ended, I am still able to maintain my weight 4 months ago, and I think this is an incredible feat to celebrate about!

Below are the ways that I want to share with everyone how I managed to reduce weight and most importantly, maintain the healthy weight!

1. Meal Planning

Here is how my typical day meals look like. This helps me to achieve a healthy diet of 10 CHO (Carbohydrate Exchange).

Breakfast at 730am: Half a cup of low-fat milk (I used to take Milo but it is high in sugar level compared to Low fat milk), 1 slice of wholemeal bread with cheese (no sugar-added jam)

Lunch at 12pm: Salad with 2 tbsp Quinoa with palm-sized chicken breast meat and bacon bits with 1 tbsp Yuzu Soya sauce at least twice a week, plus an Apple.

Mid-afternoon snack: one cup of red date with wolfberries drink or a cup of low-fat yogurt or a serving of fruit

Dinner at 7pm: 3 tbsp of mixed brown with white rice, one serving of stir fried vegetable, one palm size of stir fried or steamed fish, 1 palm size of steamed egg, 1 serving of orange or watermelon.

The above helps me to achieve the needed nutrients in a day. Choosing a healthy mid-afternoon snack is good to ensure that I am not too hungry to eat more than what I need for dinner.

For days that I do not take salad and choose to eat out with my colleagues, I will ensure that I walk more that day or cut down calorie snack for mid-afternoon snack.

2. Taking care not to take empty calories and it is OK to indulge in SINFUL Foods once in a while!

Jean told me that we should avoid empty calorie food such as desserts, sweets, food that has no nutritional value. However, in order to be able to sustain on the weight loss journey, it is also alright that we indulge in our favourite but sinful foods once in a while. It does not have to be a strictly boring diet. Sometimes, due to social reasons, it is perfectly alright to eat out of the normal meal foods.

3. Reading Labels

Do you know how to read labels and beware of how marketing tactics can mislead consumers?
Some food for thought:

Zero fat = healthy? Not really if it is high in sugar.

Trans fat free = healthy? Not really, one serving of the food can contain up to 0.5 grams of trans fat, according to the law, and still be labeled trans-fat-free. In fact, there are healthy fats such as canola oil and olive oil, which taken in moderation, do no harm to our health.

Cholesterol = fats? NO, cholesterol is not a type of fats. There is good and bad cholesterol. Don’t be misled by labels that say Cholesterol free! In fact, we should aim to eat foods that provides high HDL (High-density Lipoproteins) cholesterol to get rid of bad cholesterol and reduce risk of heart disease. Foods with high HDL cholesterol includes fatty fish, olive oil, beans, whole grains, flax, nuts, chia seeds, avocado, soy-based products. We should take more of these!!

When you read labels, you should be comparing against the 100ml nutritional list instead of a per serving list. The highest composition will top the list. Hence, if you see sugar high on the list, it means that the product contains high sugar level.

Beware of different names that mean sugar, for example, fructose, dextrose, lactose, maltose, brown sugar, cane sugar, corn syrup solids, galactose, carbitol, etc etc etc… 100 over names to represent sugar!

Try choosing the healthier choice labels, it helps in your decision to consume a healthier option. Take note that it doesn’t mean that the product is healthy, but rather it means that it is a healthier choice compared to another brand that does not carry the label. So, you can even see the label on ice-cream! It does not mean that ice-cream is healthy, but it may mean that this product contains a smaller percentage of unhealthy ingredients compared to another brand.

4. Exercise

We can’t avoid exercising when it comes to nutrition and healthy eating. We need to ensure that we have Calories Out after we consume Calories In! Otherwise all In and no Out, in no time, we will be growing in size! A rule of thumb is 150min of high intensity exercise level per week. I know, I know this is difficult. Well, we need to start somewhere. Perhaps start by brisk walking 2-3 times a week, add on swimming or light jogging. Certainly, it beats NOT EXERCISING at all, isn’t it?

5. Cut Down on Snacking

I find that removing unhealthy snacks from my work desk is very useful. No biscuits, no crackers, no titbits. There are no distractions for me to munch unnecessarily. I keep healthy snacks like fruits and low fat yogurt in my office. I drink plain water when I am thirsty. I try not to think of drinking coffee, milk tea or hot chocolate. If I really want to, I will add less or zero sugar to the tea or coffee. Such intentional lifestyle habits help in maintaining my weight.

So far, the above tips have served me very well. Occasionally, I gain 1 or 2 kg after an overseas trip. But as long as I keep to what Jean has taught me in the Active Slim Program, I am able to return to my weight quickly. I really benefited lots from this educational program. It helps me to be self-sustained in eating healthily, and even planning healthy meals for the family. I am glad that from now on, I have this blog post to show whoever wants to slim down the healthy way.

April – what goes on in our lives

While I dreaded my examinations in my school days and celebrated the end of it after going through 16 years of being a student, and more than a hundred of examinations, big or small, I have never thought I would be going through it again. Many of you should know by now that I used to be a laid back mum, learnt my lesson, and become a not-so-laid-back-mum. So, naturally, I am doing what many other parents are doing: mugging for examinations along with my children. Ok, maybe mugging is a strong word, let’s just say, reinforcing the basics but at a more intensive pace.

So, April is about preparing the kids for the examinations. Primary school students are too young to know how to prep for exams, aren’t they? I remembered I did not really study for my examinations prior to PSLE. With my wealth of experience, I decided to go through the process of this preparation with the kids, hoping to slowly let go, and let them learn how to revise on their own gradually. As much as I hate it, in this aspect, I belong to the helicopter parent for now. You will be surprised at how at Primary 5, the English examination paper is really quite tough. I need to check the dictionary or sometimes google up the word when the dictionary hasn’t got the word! And we are talking about the Oxford dictionary! And yes, we are talking about primary school standard!

Because of the exams prep, I have been neglecting my toddler as my short hours after work are totally consumed by teaching the 2 elder kids. I know it affects him because he has not been looking at me when I leave the house for work and when I come back home in the evening. All these gestures make my heart ache. I feel so guilty and really hope to make up for it after exams. Bear with Mama ok, baby?

So, while exams are important especially for my gal who is doing PSLE syllabus, I still try to strike a balance on revision and play. I don’t believe in mugging for the examinations for every waking moment. So, we brought the kids out for our usual weekend routine.

Safra Punggol – Little Explorers

Perhaps I am one of the rare parents who give the kids an exam break. On the weekend before the exams, we brought the kids to Safra Punggol for a day of fun.

D’ Elegance Shapewear – sculpt your body back to a sexy you

Many people have asked me if D’ Elegance Shapewear really works. Does it really make you look slimmer? Will I be able to fit into a dress size smaller? Are there side effects? Is it uncomfortable to wear all day long? You will be able to see all my answers and how this thing really works for me. Read on!

So far, I am into my 4th week of wearing Shapewear and depending on my needs, I will wear 2-3 pieces on most days at work. These are what I have got after my consultation session.

Long girdle and body suit

On the left is the Long Girdle (nude) which is also a thigh shaper. On the right is the Body Suit (nude) which shapes the entire body.

Short Girdle, brasserie and panty

In the second picture above, I have got the:
Waist Slimmer (nude)
Bra with good side supports and broad back supports with hook in front (nude)
Bra with good side supports and broad back support (black)
Panty with good bum support (black)

My biggest problem area is really more of my fat thighs. D’ Elegance consultant, Elida, told me not to jog and try brisk walking instead. This is because brisk walking will not make my already big thighs muscular. I heard of brisk walking benefits from sculpting a slim waist (through the twisting of the upper torso as you walk fast) to slimming down the entire body. In fact, I have seen a real life example of how brisk walking slim down a size 16 to a size 12! Elida also told me that I will need to wear the long girdle more often so that my bouncy excess fats around the back of my thigh will be sculpted back to a firmer shape.

It works for me!!

The Effects of Long Girdle

Indeed, the amazing effect happened! Continue reading “D’ Elegance Shapewear – sculpt your body back to a sexy you”

PNKids Multivitamin Syrup + Free Photobook +{Giveaway}

We all have periods of time when our body immune system is not at its most optimal. And some of us have times when we have a particular period in our lives when we will pop into health supplement shops to get a bottle or 2 of multivitamins, etc to boost our immunity. When my kids came along and especially once they entered childcare centres, the common “fear” of kids falling sick easily in enclosed environment full of children was very real and proven. So, that’s how the kiasu mummy in me went to Watsons, Guardian, departmental stores to spend many afternoons to read through the labels of all the seemingly terrific multivitamin brands.

Over the years, we have changed many brands, some multivitamins gummies were hard, some were too sweet and eventually, we settled on PNKids gummies which the kids have not asked to change to any other brand ever since. No wonder PNKids has been ranked No.1 Kids Multivitamin Brand in Singapore last year in the Western pharmacy stores according to AC Nielson report and has been awarded “Top Brand” in the kids dietary supplements category! Also, my due diligence to check out the labels tells me that PNKids only uses premium grade ingredients and strictly without artificial flavours and colours.

PNKids gummies were not too sweet in my opinion because we have tasted sweeter ones. I didn’t really like that it was full of sugar coating. However, I found out that the sugar coat was really to prevent the gummies from sticking together than to entice children further with its sweetness. Come to think of it, an innocent sip of soft drink is probably many times more than the amount of sugar coated on each gummy.

Do you know that now, they have SUGAR-FREE GUMMIES?! No more worrying about sugar-induced hyperactive children. Oh, and the kids love the surprises that come with each packaging.

Also, do you always wonder what is stated as BOY and GIRL on PNKids multivitamins gummies has actually no difference in their amount of vitamins?

The only difference is the toys inside! Imagine a boy getting a “surprise” when he sees a doll inside the box!

New PNKids Multivitamin Syrup

PNKids Syrup box

PNKids has a new multivitamin product that was just launched in August!

This is the PNKids Multivitamin Syrup in mango flavour!

Have you tried their mango flavoured Prebiotics gummies? The syrup is exactly the same good taste.

PNKids Multivitamin Syrup is a “Complete” nutritional syrup formulation, which contains 21 essential vitamins and minerals for optimal nourishment in children. It is a good supplement for picky eaters. Continue reading “PNKids Multivitamin Syrup + Free Photobook +{Giveaway}”
