{Media Invite + Giveaway}
Ever since we were impressed by the successful performance of the Young People’s Concert by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra which incorporates the beauty of Pulau Ubin, we had total full confidence that music performance along the line of immersing in different forms of art, dance, nature and a story will captivate us alike.
There is one performance that you MUST bring your kids to watch and this is Ding Yi Music Company re-enacting the legend of Sisters’ Islands with the music collaboration of Sand Art and Javanese Dance performances! The performance which includes multiple art forms is suitable for the whole family! Yes, kids, adults and elders too!
Think of Ding Yi Music Company, the first Chinese chamber music ensemble in Singapore, with its distinctive approach to composing and interpreting a wide repertoire that ranges from traditional Chinese music to contemporary and even cross-genre works.
Think of Sand Art performance by the celebrated artist, Mr Lawrence Koh, an international sand art virtuoso and multi-disciplinary artist specialized in both visual and performing arts.
Think of a Javanese dance performance by Mr Garrett Kam, an accomplished performer and choreographer of classical Javanese dance in the Yogyakarta court style.
Think of the same great conductor, Mr Quek Ling Kiong, who is now my favourite conductor after seeing his friendly and creative engagement with the kids in the Young People’s concert. Mr Quek is currently an adjunct teacher at the Lasalle College of the Arts and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Music Director for Singapore Management University Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra and Conductor for Singapore most acclaimed Chinese Chamber ensemble the Ding Yi Music Company.
Think of all these put together, and I am already looking forward to how the performance will wow my kids and myself!

I am pretty excited to share about our addiction to Escape Room concept game!
Previously I have read reviews from The Little Mom and Mummy Ed and I was not sure if the kids could handle, but after we went to U Escape at Plaza Singapura during the September holidays, we all got hooked! And 2 days later, we went again, but as we did not book for it, we checked out another Escape Room and we loved that too!

What is an Escape Room?
An Escape Room is usually designed with a theme, for instance the one that we went is a CASINO room.
The ultimate aim is to break codes and locks to finally unlock the door of the room within a limited time, like 60 min.
You have to move around the room and find clues which will lead to a combination code of a lock or a key to a lock to unlock the next clue and so on.
It requires team work, wit, and creativity.
There are different theme rooms to choose from, ranging from family friendly, to more challenging ones and even Virtual Reality Scary ones. There is music played in the background which adds to the mood of the game.
Number of pax: typically from 2 – 14
How do we play?
There are many versions of Escape Rooms in Singapore.
U Escape, being our first Escape Room experience, is very suitable for kids and family in my opinion. That is from our experience of 2 different Escape Room concept between U Escape and another similar Escape Room provider.
We were told the River Quay Casino is the most family friendly and has a more vibrant theme and Room 13 is the more challenging one. We decided to try out River Quay Casino as it might be more suitable for our young kids especially when we had the 4yo with us too.
I like that U Escape has a Game Master dedicated to guide us in our game. We were led into the Casino room and after a short briefing by the Game Master, he left us to explore the room on our own. The timer started to count down from 60 min.
Initially I thought that both Kel and I would have to break most codes since the kids may not be as witty as us, how wrong was I!! The kids were happy to explore around and dared to touch anything and anywhere, and they had better chances in finding clues than us. Usually, they get warned on itchy hands when their curiosity get the better of them in new places, but over here in this room, my first instruction to them is ”Go ahead and explore and feel around.”
Whenever we got stuck, we had 3 chances to shout for clues, in which the Game Master will type out the clue on the computer screen on the wall. Perhaps, seeing that we have 3 young kids and time was running out quick, he typed subtle clues whenever he saw that we spent too much time at a location. Each time his message comes, there will be a soft “Ding” and we would all look up at the screen for his message. Sometimes, we even talked to him, and he replied on the screen. I thought this was really, really helpful for us as there were really many codes to break and spending more than even 5 min at one part is considered too much time wasted.
There was a moment when my youngest was a little upset that he did not know what we were all busy searching around for that he started to cry. We had neglected him in our urgency to search for clues. So, I brought him to a corner and got him to unlock a door combination lock again and again by repeating the numbers to him to which he opened that lock numerous times. Thankfully for him, when the door was accidentally closed, no one could remember the lock combination anymore as we had advanced to many other locks, except me who had chanted the code, and this time the little one could open the door and beamed with pride that he helped “solve” a clue!
I would say many of the clues are cleverly thought and arranged. We were amazed at some of the ingeniously hidden ones. When the time was up, we were still left with 2 locks. The Game Master appeared and revealed the final clues that we did not solve. We left the room feeling all hyped up on the fun. The older 2 kids could not stop talking about the experience and pestered us to go again. I feel that this is a really good place for family bonding as we need to work together and use our wit to break out of the room together. In fact, we loved it so much that I suggested going again 2 days later when we went for a playdate with Master 9’s classmates.
On the second occasion when we checked out the other Escape concept place, we were a little shocked that they do not have a Game Master like U Escape. Hence, we struggled in solving the clues within only 45 minutes, compared to U Escape’s 60 minutes. There were no clues typed out for us to read and whenever we got stuck, we pressed a bell for help and a staff member would appear to guide us on wherever we were at. As 45 minutes was really too fast for us kids and mummies, I find that this Escape room provider is more suited for experts who need minimal or no help. It is certainly not so easy for young kids to start with.
If you ask me, I will tell you that we will certainly be planning Escape Room fun for the kids again! And what’s more, for the start of the school holidays from now till 30 November, just quote

The day I read about the tragic news of a Primary 5 child who plunged to his death because he did not want to face the remainder of the day due to his poor results, my heart actually skipped a beat.
It was not because I am the type of Kiasu Mum who will punish my kids for not meeting my target marks, in fact, I DO NOT have a target mark for my children to meet, but it was more of getting a self-check on whether I am putting my children through high stress UNKNOWINGLY!
The day I read about the tragic news of a Primary 5 child who plunged to his death because he did not want to face the remainder of the day due to his poor grades, my heart actually skipped a beat.
It was not because I am the type of Kiasu Mum who will punish my kids for not meeting my target marks, in fact, I DO NOT have a target mark for my children to meet, but it was more of getting a self-check on whether I am putting my children through high stress UNKNOWINGLY!
I read through the article and it stated that the boy’s mum cried out that she did not expect him to get 80 marks and it was “only 70 marks” that she had asked for. That gave me a wake up call too. What if I thought that I am a good mum who is doing the best for my kids and that my expectations (if any) are reasonable, but the kids are actually feeling too stressed out by my expectations or actions? It never occurred to me that my kids may be stressed. Have I looked out for signs that they are feeling stressful? Have I been doing a self-check on myself and checking on my actions and my facial expressions when they bring back the exam papers to me to sign?
Kids, nowadays, are indeed subjected to too much stress, from peers, from teachers, from tuition teachers, from parents, from grandparents, from society. And to make things worse, they are more vulnerable than previous generations who are more resilient and know how precious lives are. Their vulnerability comes from being too sheltered, too scared to fail, no chance to fail, and comes from growing up in a safety net around them and not permitted to take controlled risks. Are these the results of our “can’t afford to fail” mentality expected of our children?
The first thing I did when I returned home that day after I read the news was to catch my girl in a relax mood to talk. I asked my eldest if she felt stressful with the exams preparation. She answered yes. I was surprised as I had never thought that she was stressful because she played more than she studied and I detected no signs of stress in her. Neither is she taking any academic enrichment classes outside school that will cause her stress.
Me: Why do you feel stressed?
Missy 11: I am worried that I will not do well in the examinations.
Ok, stress noted and acknowledged. Then, I started to talk about my learning journey of how I fared a 238 for my PSLE, went into a better than average school with lowest cut off of 232 (now a top school), and began to ace my Math which was my worst subject in PSLE, ace my way to University and ended up just an average worker in the workforce and not earning as much as those who fared average in school.
ALTERNATIVE ACADEMIC ROUTES DO NOT DEFINE OR CONDEMN YOU IN ANY WAY
Me: Well, that’s more to life than getting good results. So what if you do not score well in P5 SA2 exams or PSLE? When you grow up and look back, these are just 2 small chapters in your life. Just accept that you have done your best and have a pat on your back for that. If you do not do as well in PSLE, you may go to an average school, or take the slightly longer route in Secondary School of Normal Academic or Normal Tech. These are just alternative routes to learning and they do not define you or condemn you in any way. It is not going to stop you from achieving success in life with other talents. Maybe you are not academic incline in Primary School, and it doesn’t mean you will not realize your academic potential in Secondary School when you meet a good teacher. The most important thing is that you have tried your BEST and be HAPPY.
I recalled with my gal on the time she failed her Math in P3. Now, fast forward 2.5 years later, I really appreciate that failure.
I told her: The most important thing after a failure is what you do after that. Do you reflect on your failure and get more motivated to do better or do you wallow in self-pity or self-destruction and waste the ‘Failure’ experience?
In my girl’s case, it was a good failure which I am happy that it happened. Without failing, she would probably not have experienced and gone through what the failure made her to be: More resilient and more motivated.
I had earlier mentioned in my previous post that PSLE Year will not be an enjoyable year. Now I think about it, it doesn’t have to be that way. Since teachers in school are putting pressure on the PSLE students, all the more I should moderate the stress by planning activities for destress and enjoyment. How can one waste one year of life to mug for examinations?
PARENTS AS CHEERLEADERS
I feel that parents are the best supporters and cheerleaders in their children’s lives. As cheerleaders, your job is not to scold your teammates and instead your job is to motivate and give encouraging words. Who doesn’t know that positive words go towards better self-esteem and better performance for an individual? This is commonly known in sports team or workplace where coach/boss give a pat on player/employee’s back, in relationship when a husband give encouraging words to his wife or vice versa, and certainly it does more good than harm for a parent to give encouraging words to his child.
I seriously hope that PSLE can be scrapped one day. It does not provide much value add to move to Secondary School and beyond. Since we are doing away with school ranking, why not do away with an exam that serves no significant purpose in life except create a whole lot of unhealthy stress in our young children and us, parents? Further, in a recent news, ” South Korea and Singapore, both high achievers at school level, are below average in the graduate rankings.” Now, that’s some food for thought on our education system.
CHECK OUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
Back to the tragic case of the P5 boy, all I want to say is that when a child does badly, he knows it. We don’t have to reiterate to him on how badly he does, or show him a disappointed face combined with a slow shake of head. We should never never punished physically for bad results. Most of the time, the child feels worse than us. After a while, our emotions subside and we may feel it was not such a big deal after all. But the child, on the receiving end of the parents’ disappointed faces or negative words may feel it for a long long time.
NEVER COMPARE
And never compare your child with another person, especially siblings. If my hubby constantly compares me with another woman, you will be sure I will detest that woman instead of improving myself. I supposed the same thing applies to comparing academic results. Comparing serves no purpose.
Nevermind that my girl is in the 2nd class from the bottom as long as she is happy and enjoys learning. Having said that, academic basics and foundation are still necessary to be reinforced to the ability of the child. As Confucius said,”Different strokes for Different Folks (因材施教)“, it is how the parents coach their own children according to their aptitude that will benefit them. I am determined to make PSLE year for her a less stressful year and one that she will not remember for an unpleasant learning journey.
Safari Boo is back again for the 3rd year and we are happy that we have the chance to preview it to bring you the highlights for the event + a GIVEAWAY at the end of this post! In fact, I am so excited to share about this fun event that I churn out this post on the very same night!
Safari Boo is back again for the 3rd year and we are happy that we have the chance to preview it to bring you the highlights for the event + a GIVEAWAY at the end of this post! In fact, I am so excited to share about this fun event that I churn out this post on the very same night!
We had our first Safari Boo in 2014 when they hosted their first event which was a resounding success. This year’s theme is on Aliens and Monsters. Before you go dismiss this as a scary Halloween event, fret not, this is a super friendly Halloween trick or treat kids-friendly one that you will not want to miss.
What you can expect are many friendly Aliens and Monsters to give out TREATS to the little ones, crafts and games, and 2 new shows featuring ‘Monster Boo’ and ‘Mermaid Mania’. Let’s take a look at what we like!
TRICK OR TREAT AT PARTY CENTRAL
There are some activity booths here set up by the partners and sponsors where your kids can have a go at the games and win little gifts. This is outside River Safari. Look out for the signs.
My toddler won some chocs from Sophisca Booth to much envy from his Jie Jie and Gor Gor!
As we enter the River Safari, each of the kids was given a little treats bag which were filled up pretty quickly to the delight of the kids!
As before, there are many interesting Halloween Riddles to entertain us.
If you have never been to River Safari in the night, Safari Boo will let you experience the night view of animals with soft lightings and a little Halloween atmosphere. Have you seen the ceiling leading to the entrance of River Safari?
You will still get to see these animals and fishes active in the night.
Extra-terrestrial Encounters (Mascots)
Everywhere we went, we saw these friendly encounters dressed in lit up costumes that were all insta-worthy and all they wanted to do was to fill up the little ones’ treat bags. Isn’t that lovely?
Performance and Show – Mermaid Mania
Mermaid Mania will feature a choreographed underwater musical performance by mermaids. Be mesmerised by the beauty and grace of the mermaids of myth as they swim amongst their real-life counterparts – the manatees.
Look at how the manatees chase after the Mermaids’ tails!
Performance and Show – Monster Boo! Animal Presentation
At Monster Boo! Animal Presentation, kids can join forces with monsters, aliens and their animal friends such as the slithery python, scaly iguana and mischievous pelican in their battle against the evil Doctor V.
There are a few showtime for this performance to make sure you will not miss this interactive show that all kids love. The show is engaging to all adults and kids alike, and you will see many animals as part of the cast. I shall not spoil the surprise and am going to show you only a few teasers here.
Alien Funshop & Alien Inc. (Arts and crafts and games)
There are 2 places with activity booths. One is near the Mama Panda Kitchen restaurant and the other is near Jia Jia and Kai Kai ‘s home. At the activity booths, solve the mysteries of real-life aliens—invasive animal species—which do not belong and why they should not be kept as illegal pets. These are educational booths that help the kids understand how and why we should protect animals. Kids can also try blending in with the new alien and monster inhabitants with face painting and other craft activities.
Alien Invasion Booth
Illegal Entry Booth
Stamp Our Stand
Alien UFO Booth
Smuggler Smack-Down Booth
Alien Fun Shop
We take a stroller with us whenever we bring the kids to the Singapore Zoo, River Safari and Night Safari just in case any of the kids is tired and it is good for carrying bags too. I must say, our stroller went in with one bag of water bottles and came out with 5,6 bags of treats and prizes! So, if you are planning to go to Safari Boo, do come with strollers, or big bags to keep those treats which are spilling from the small treat bags!
Safari Boo is held over 6 nights: 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 & 30 Oct from 6-10pm. Tickets for Safari Boo are only available online.

With the festive season round the corner and many nieces and nephews’ birthdays coming up, I am starting to hit the online stores more frequently than ever!
If you do not already know, there are 2 big dates to remember for impossibly cheap deals in online shopping every year.
With the festive season round the corner and many nieces and nephews’ birthdays coming up, I am starting to hit the online stores more frequently than ever!
If you do not already know, there are 2 big dates to remember for impossibly cheap deals in online shopping every year. This year, mark the dates of 11/11 and Black Friday on 25/11. There will be millions of transactions for many cheap deals!
But, I try to avoid these dates because I prefer to shop in peace than to get my adrenaline too high! I also worry that I may end up buying unnecessary things. After all, shopping is supposed to be an enjoyable experience so I prefer non-competitive sales.
With so many online stores around to do the 3 quotes thing, I still prefer those which have focused products. Although Taobao and Qoo10 are good places too, sometimes I hesitate to place order, as I am not so sure if I am getting the real thing or not. The more well-established ones, like Agapebabies, would put my heart at ease and it is a good choice for a few reasons:
1) Agapebabies focus on mums and babes’ necessities – then I will not fall into the same habit of digressing to other products that caught my eyes and cause me to lose focus in shopping for what I really want.
2) Authenticity – I can be sure that what I buy here are not pirated brands.
3) Prices– I cannot speak for all products since I have not compared ALL, but some of the products that are on sale are really good buys at steep discount, and some are really cheaper than retail / other online stores.
4) Delivery– They have various options on delivery and I like that! One-click self collection from 3 convenient locations – Newton, Sengkang and Old Airport Road. Smaller parcels enjoy 72 pick up locations. (Details here)
5) Brands and product selection – They are partnering with increasingly more brands and I am happy to know they have JuJuBe and 3M! Right now, they carry over 250 brands and 6000 products in over 10 categories. As I am typing this, they had just launched the Sanrio JuJuBe limited edition and unisex-friendly collection Black Ops and Chome. Even dads can shop here!
6) Friendly web interface – I like their revamped website and their mobile optimized site looks and feels like an app.
Look at what I have bought for the purpose of this review:
Cloud B Twilight Carz – Red Lightning
Prior to this review opportunity, my Master 4 had found this toy in Hamleys store and stuffed it in my hands just when I was checking out. Kids really know when to catch the best moment, don’t they? It could be easy to just pay for it since I was already making payment for another toy, but I decided to brave through his wails and reject him even though his birthday was round the corner. That was because I believed I could find the same toy cheaper elsewhere. As what a friend told me that I am maintaining 3 Ferraris (3 kids), I have to find ways to spend wisely. And I was happy to find out that this toy was sold at a lower price in Agapebabies!
This car casts really beautiful stars on the walls and ceiling. It has the option to change from red stars to blue stars. The headlights and tail-lights do light up too! Since then, it has been providing good entertainment for the kids at bed time.
JuJuBe Legacy Be Quick – My First Lady
I love this bag which I can use as a wristlet, use as a weekend travel light bag that I sling over my shoulders, or as a small pouch to throw inside an overnighter!
It is so versatile, can be machine-washed, and looking sleek at the same time. It can go with casual clothes and flip flops and look good with dress and heels!
Not only that, it is just of the right size, enough to put my long wallet, handphone, tissue, insect repellent and has an inner pocket for my keys, lipstick, hair clip and earphones!
If you are a VIP member (spend $200 or more), you can enjoy discount for JuJuBe and many other items too.
For first time customers, you can get a $10 OFF and a FREE gift + next day delivery on your first purchase of $150 or more. Just key in the code: agape10 (T&Cs apply)
DISCOUNT CODE!
If you are planning to get some Christmas gifts or baby necessities on Agapebabies, I have a 5% discount code to share with all of you!
DISCOUNT CODE: kidsrsimple5%
Note that this discount code excludes milk, diapers, wipes, medela breastpumps, JuJuBe, Spectra sale and clearance categories.
Discount code is valid from now till 3 November 2016.
Happy shopping!
Disclaimer: A gift voucher was given for the purpose of this review on shopping experience. The views and opinions on Agapebabies and the 2 products that I bought with the voucher are my own. I like what I bought so much that I had to document it down. I hope if you do shop at Agapebabies, please use my discount code within these 3 weeks and hope you have a great experience too!
