Having the Capacity to Love Other Children

I guess at some point in time as a young mum, my life revolved around just my children. I was trying to be the best mum and learning curve was really steep. As a result, the focus was narrow. Life was not really wholesome. The first person I neglected must be myself, followed by my hubby and then probably all other human beings. Luckily it did not last long. Partly, my hubby is a patient man and he is laid back enough to balance me. I then started to have a “life” that did not focus 100% on the children and I must say that made me happier.

I guess at some point in time as a young mum, my life revolved around just my children. I was trying to be the best mum and the learning curve was really steep.

Not only did I connect with myself, my hubby, my parents, in-laws, family and friends, I find that when I am with nephews, nieces and children of close friends, I genuinely wish to connect with them individually. When the focus on a particular area has been enlarged, I began to see more things that matter too. For nephews and nieces, that goes without saying that they have lots of my love. I remember their birthdays, prepare presents for them, and I even remember their important milestones in life like taking PSLE and ‘O’ Levels. I am really concerned about their well-being, make time to talk to them, create many opportunities for them to play with my own children, caress their hair, hugging them, etc. I am slowly doing the same with close friends’ children as well.

Then, something beautiful happened. Recently, I received a feedback from one of my child’s good friends who commented that Kel and I are awesome parents and that my child has an amazing family and he loves us as much as he loves his own family. I was really touched. I never expected that our gestures, our genuine care and concern and our family love could have such pleasant impact on another child’s life. I am just too happy that we touched and warmed a child’s heart.

I am sure our children are proud as well.

Another story that was told to me a few years ago by a nurse was that she used to have many neighbourhood kids who would queue up just to let her wash their hair in their village. They enjoyed the way she washed their hair and talked to them gently, asking how was their day and some small chat. Fast forward many years later, when her daughter moved to another city for college, the neighbours who had their hair washed by her when they were young, went all out to help her daughter settle down well.

What a touching story of kindness begets kindness!

In the fast pace of life that we live in, putting some time and effort to show care and concern to other children could be our least priority. Hence, that brings me to the question that I have been pondering for some time: why are we constantly in a rush to beat the time? Taking some pauses and really connecting heart to heart with a human being surely has to be more meaningful than finishing the never-ending house chores or work commitment or focusing on academics. I think it is worthwhile to take a moment to chat with someone, show genuine concern and with that, I hope to rub some of these on my children:

The joy of connecting and giving my time for small little things in life that matter.

How to ensure 8-10yo child safety when I am not by their side

how to keep kid safe

From the second semester onwards, my 10yo girl has to stay back for classes or volleyball training for 4 times a week. That means she goes out the house before 7 and is only back after 4pm daily by school bus. It is like an 8 hour job, isn’t it? We are thinking to let her take the public transport back on her own. But without a phone, I am worried about her safety on the road and also safety in general. Continue reading “How to ensure 8-10yo child safety when I am not by their side”

Imaginarium @ SAM (March holiday activities)

Imaginarium

I brought the kiddos to one of our favourite place, SAM (Singapore Art Museum) at 8Q today. We always remember a couple of years back, we had a fun time engaging in art fun with interactive art work in the Art Garden theme from Children’s Seasons at the same place. So, today, we are back here again after reading a fellow mum blogger’s review on Imaginarium.

ImaginariumA Voyage of Big Ideas is also part of the countless celebrations for Singapore’s 50th birthday. It is a theme inspired by the crescent moon on the Singapore’s flag, a symbol of a young nation on the rise with the capacity to dream big and think large. All the interactive art works are inspired by artists from Singapore and the region. It is interesting to read the write up beside each exhibit and activity room on the artists’ ideas. A working mum’s woes

I had started my new job in October this year.
I got accepted in a totally new arena and was never so happy in my whole career life to finally do something I like. I was even mentally prepared to do my best and work late because I am determined to excel in my work.

Then work started, and all my predictions came true.

It is a challenging job. It is a work late job. I work more than 10 hours most days, sometimes 12 hours. I resist bringing work home so far. And work began to eat into my time with my kids and family. When I said I was determined to put in effort and time, I really did. I employed a domestic helper (finally!) so that I can concentrate on spending time with my children after I get home from work and have the sanity to handle the pressure at work.

With lesser time with the family and great work stress, I find myself getting tired easily and lesser patience with the children who yearn ever more attention from me. I feel my guilt surfacing almost everyday whenever I lose my cool, and make the kids upset. Such a situation leaves me a total wreck and more guilty and the vicious cycle repeats. There are a few times a thought of regret leaving my cushion job (not high pay though) haunts me and that made me feel worse. Maybe a woman is suited to stay at home, or otherwise not be too career focused. My girl starts to ask me why I had to change my job. The feeling hurts.

This morning, my baby wanted me to sit beside him while he ate his puffs. He knew I was about to leave for work and insisted that I stayed with him longer. I was running late but I obliged and stayed with him for another 10 seconds, what seemed like 10 minutes. Then, I stood up, kissed him and told him Mummy had to leave for work. He then sat still, eyes glued to the Baby TV which I had switched on for him on purpose, and did not turn around to see me leave. Just before I left the house, I stood at the door telling him all the sweet nothings about how much I love him and saying goodbye to a back facing baby. All this while, he did not turn around. After a few seconds later when I was walking towards the lift, I heard him let out a loud wail and started crying “Papa! Papa! Papa!” to his sleeping dad. My heart flew to him literally but I stood rooted to the ground. I knew if I had gone back to him, it would be worse for him and me to experience the separation twice. Agapebabies – mum shopping a breeze

I am actually not a savvy mum.

While all my peers are into online shopping and buying cute baby clothes, diapers, mums’ essentials at a click of a finger, I still like to go to the stores and buy during sale. I like to feel the clothes that I am buying and enjoy the shopping moments when I walk in and out of stores in heels and looking pretty in Orchard Road. Ha!

Then, at this time when I am extremely busy and taking a day off from work to indulge in shopping is no longer at will, my saviour comes to the rescue. The friendly folks at Agapebabies introduced me to the multi-store concept of online shopping. I could finally call myself a newbie “savvy mum”.
