Ending July 2017 with …

We have crossed a good half of the year for 2017! Very soon, it will be the end of the year. I am kind of glad that I did not set out any resolutions for 2017 to beat myself for not achieving much at this mid-year check. I guess life goes on and we just busy ourselves along. What’s important is really whether we are happy with our life now and are we contented? At this mid-year check on myself, I should really be counting my blessings more than harping on meeting any goals. Don’t you think so?

We have crossed a good half of the year for 2017! Very soon, it will be the end of the year. I am kind of glad that I did not set out any resolutions for 2017 to beat myself for not achieving much at this mid-year check. I guess life goes on and we just busy ourselves along. What’s important is really whether we are happy with our life now and are we contented? At this mid-year check on myself, I should really be counting my blessings more than harping on meeting any goals. Don’t you think so?

I have many blessings to count and I am saying that because life is kind of mundane and mundane in itself is a bliss. At down times, I choose to find consolation in any small things that I should be contented with and be thankful for things that we often take for granted. At happy times, these feelings go into my emotional bank to be retrieved at times of need. Life is short, so why not make everyday count? It will be good if my kids know how to stand strong and be contented with their lives and be happy. Resilience, perhaps, is more important than any academic achievement that the kids should achieve.

So much for a philosophical wrap up for July. Now, here’s what we have been up to.

Preparation for Prelims …

I am thankful for an understanding boss and hence am able to give much support to Missy for Prelims preparation. Sometimes when I am home, Missy is busy doing her homework or doing self-revision. On many afternoons, my role is really to be THERE for her. I am a walking dictionary, prompter to academic questions, and my teacher role is getting smaller to much of my satisfaction. That shows that she is improving and taking good charge of her learning such that my involvement has switched focus on supporting her other needs. I chat with her, entertain her performance of hand-stand, stunts when she takes study breaks, prepare snacks for afternoon tea-breaks and encourage her when she loses steam.

Prelims is over. I am exceptionally anxious to see if our hard work for the past months will be paid off. I really hope to see more than a small improvement so that Missy’s confidence will be boosted.

On Health …

We had been hit by a bout of flu that went round the family in July. What was worse than this was that I sprained my ankle badly on a morning jog. I fell down a flight of steps. Ever since then, my ankle has been healing ever so slowly. I envy those who can run and hop and jump with their good legs. 1 month after I sprained the ankle, I still cannot run for the bus. I cannot continue my Pilates and Zumba clases. I cannot run about with the kids. Another recent disappointment is that I have to give up any long distance runs for the time being. How can I even take for granted my good pair of legs before this? I am frustrated with the stupidity of not warming up before a run. This teaches me a painful lesson.

Perhaps there are still good things that comes out of this episode. I learnt to walk slower. I start to consciously take care of my body and avoid taking short cuts or compromise my posture, anything that will hurt my body. Hopefully I can be up and about in 3 months time.

On Reading …

I am reading slowly but not stopping. To inculcate a reading culture in our home, I removed decorative pieces from 2 shelves of the TV console to make way for books. The books are refreshed every now and then to entice the kids to pick up a book and read. We frequent the neighbourhood library, bought new books and brought the kids to sgbookdeals to grab 49 books for $50 in a box. I purposely leave books strewn about on the tables and bathroom for any chance that the kids will pick them up. I ask the kids to bring a book along to read while on public transport or waiting for meals. I have a book list chart for them to fill up completed titles. We have reading hours and bedtime reading if time permits. It takes time to build up a reading culture at home, and it is never too late to start now.

So, I am ending July 2017 with… contentment

Contentment

July was not an exciting month partly because we spent much time for Prelims Preparation (Click here if you wish to know more on how we prepared for our Prelims). However on weekends, we still bring the kids out to breathe fresh air, dispense their energy and for family bonding. Examinations will not stop these play times. I am totally thankful that so far, our no-tuition way works out for us so that we have more time to relax and indulge in more important things than academic. I hope August will be a healthier month for us and better luck to accompany us from now 🙂

How did your July go?

PSLE Science Workshop for Parents – How to Achieve A* (Seriously!)

Having sat through 2 Saturdays of 6.5 hours each on learning PSLE Science Strategies, I am excited to share with all of you what I have learnt and started using on my elder 2 kids. It is never too early to apply some of these techniques if you are wondering whether these tips apply to P1 to P5. In fact, there was one parent who came to this PSLE workshop and her child is only in K2. No, we do not think she is Kiasu. In fact, we all think she has good foresight!

Ace Science

Having sat through 2 Saturdays of 6.5 hours each on learning PSLE Science Strategies, I am excited to share with all of you what I have learnt and started using on my elder 2 kids. It is never too early to apply some of these techniques if you are wondering whether these tips apply to P1 to P5. In fact, there was one parent who came to this PSLE workshop and her child is only in K2. No, we do not think she is Kiasu. In fact, we all think she has good foresight!

Some of the tips that we have learnt are similar to what the student workshop covered, hence, I shall avoid repeating them as much in this post. If you wish to refer to what other good answering techniques and strategies for Science, you may refer to my earlier post here.

There are 6 Tips to Ace-Star the Science Paper. Yes, it is possible to achieve A* for Science!!!

1) Examination Strategies

Before Prelims and PSLE, do the following practices:
– Aim for 20 right questions in 20 min (MCQ)
– Aim for 20 marks in 20 min (OEQ)

For Prelims and PSLE, your child should try to aim for the following marks:
Section A MCQ – Aim for full marks or at most allow up to 2 wrong questions. With this, the child would have already pass the paper just by doing Section A (out of 56 marks)
Section B OEQ – Aim to achieve 80% of the marks in Section B (35 out of 44 marks)

If your child is able to achieve the above, he/she will be able to get 91/100 which is equivalent to A*, if not 91, then would be a high A.

2) Copy down right answers from Assessment Books

The answers in Assessment books are vetted through by a team of educators before being published by the publisher. Hence they tend to be more reliable and are usually short and precise answers. In contrast, Top School Papers answers can be given by undergraduates who are paid by the Printing Company and are usually not vetted through. No wonder, we sometimes spot incorrect answers.

Having acknowledge the inaccuracies, we will still continue to do Top School Papers but I will mark with good reasoning if I doubt the integrity of the answers. So, for our Science practices, we prefer to do Assessment Books and memorise the way of answering questions from the answers given.

3) Review School Worksheets and Past SA / CA Papers mistakes

This is the top most important revision that all students should do. It is important to review and revise School Worksheets and learn from past SA/CA Papers mistakes. Mr Chee reiterated this again and again. He strongly believes that if all the mistakes in the past are now done correctly, there will be no doubt in getting an A* for Science paper.

20170624_111321

4) Forgetting Curve

Mr Chee told us about the “Forgetting Curve” meaning that human memory goes down with time. We should revise and relook at what we have learnt within 2 days of gaining a knowledge. This will ensure that knowledge learnt is reinforced in our memory. Thus, revise on the Science topic as soon as it is taught in school. As parents, we can note down the days that Science lessons are conducted and have a quick 15 minute walk through of the topic at the end of the day with the child.

5) Subscribe to Science Magazines (Young Scientist, Discovery Box, etc)

Subscribing Science Magazines is a very good way to start kids into loving Science and gaining Science facts and information. The knowledge is presented in comic form or colourful and engaging layout to attract interest and attention.

Thanks to Mr Chee’s reminder on Science Magazine Subscription. I went home to bring out a few of the Young Scientist magazines that we had previously subscribed and laid them on the table. Master 10 immediately took them and re-read these magazines upon seeing them. And what surprised me even more is that my Master 5 followed his brother and turned the pages from one magazine to the next. That lasted at least 2 weeks of reading them!

So, if you have not ever subscribed to any of such Science Magazines, I strongly urge you to do so. Kids love comic books and the content in these magazines are really informative, interesting and easy to understand. You can go to Popular bookstore to buy the previous year’s subscription in one go or subscribe them online to have the magazine delivered to your house every month. (Note: I realised that Discovery Box is not found in Popular. You may wish to subscribe online via this website.)

6) Watch Documentaries / Go to Nature Parks

Encourage TV time on Documentaries like Nat Geo Wild, Discovery Channel, etc. Sit down with your child to watch together and explain if necessary or learn together with them!

Science is really all around us, no matter where you are. Singapore has lovely nature parks that can let you observe and learn relevant Science topics that are covered in school syllabus, like the kind of tropical trees, seed dispersion, life cycle of animals and insects, Adaptations, etc. Bring the kids out frequently to be keen observers on Mother Nature, this will surely spark their interest in Science.

If you would have noticed, the above tips in excelling in Science requires time and effort and daily interactions. It would be good to start stimulating curiosity in your child right now and get them to be sensitive to the surroundings, observe more, ask questions, and discuss about daily Science.

Even though I only get to learn about this in a PSLE workshop, I do not think we are too late to start sparkling interest in the kids. Learning is a lifelong journey. At 12 yo, we are certainly in time!

Resource Books that We Are Using

We are using the PSLE Ultimate Science Guide and the corresponding MCQ and OEQ Workbooks. We use them for target practices.PSLE Ultimate Science

Mr Chee recommended his book Science of Success which we find is very unlike the normal Science Assessment books around. It tests the basic Science facts and understanding and is in a layout that is easy for revision and reference. We have been using it and some of the facts tested are really what we found in Top School Papers and not found in normal textbooks. It covers out of the textbook knowledge too!

Yishun Park Playground – Family Fitness with Skechers

We have never thought of giving up our family weekend outings even if exams are nearing. We enjoy outdoor play. It refreshes the mind and lift up mood. While our kids are still keen on going out as a family, we will treasure every single opportunity to bring them to nature, parks and playgrounds. Last weekend, we visited Yishun Park Playground and yes, we wore our Skechers shoes along to test out the comfort!

While our kids are still keen on going out as a family, we will treasure every single opportunity to bring them to nature, parks and playgrounds. Last weekend, we visited Yishun Park Playground and yes, we wore our Skechers shoes along to test out the comfort!

We hardly venture Yishun for playgrounds as it is not known for huge playgrounds and parks like Pasir Ris Park Playground and West Coast Park Playground. But the hub has been driving past this Yishun Park and has seen that the playground facilities look very fun, hence, he suggested to make a visit here.

Isn’t this park awesome? There are jogging tracks beside the playground. Me and hub were able to jog while the kids play. But as usual, the kids sighted us and ran up to jog alongside with us when we really thought we had the luck to have some couple time on a weekend! Fat hope! Well, we enjoy exercising together as a family. Couple time can be arranged on other days.

Look who outran us?!

Have you noticed the bright and cheerful Skechers Shoes on our feet? We have tested the shoes’ performance on the Yishun Park jogging tracks, the grip on climbing ropes and obstacles and the responsiveness on various grounds of sand, pavement, and even wet floors when we continued our weekend play to Safra Yishun Swimming Pool.

GOrun 5 red and purple

Our family is very new to Skechers shoes and my first pair was only recently bought from my US trip. I loved the GoWalk series to bits when I wore them to walk up and down 5th Avenue for hours without feeling tired. We heard lots of fave about Skechers shoes being extremely light weight and comfortable. And true enough, that was exactly our experience with the shoes! My hub’s first exclamation upon trying out the GOrun 5 in red/orange was: “They’re so LIGHT!”

Indeed, being light weight is a big advantage for attaining speed in running and responsiveness to avoid injuries. Both my hub and I love the GOrun 5 series especially when approaching towards the end of a long run, we did not feel that we had to drag our feet. GOrun 5 is the 5th generation of the GOrun series and its innovative technologies provide excellent cushioning and impact protection. Missy, being almost an adult has her first adult size sport shoes with the same Skechers GOrun 5 in purple. We chose the same colour so that we can go twinning on the same shoes! Isn’t that’s what having a daughter is all about?!

GOrun 5 Purple

Both the boys are wearing Skechers Flex Advantage 2.0 shoes with Air-Cooled Memory Foam insole. They, too, are enjoying the amazingly light weight footwear so that they can run fast! The Skech-Knit Mesh one piece fabric also allows breath-ability, hopefully cutting down the sweaty stench that the boys tend to have. They have chosen the bright blue colour which is an easy match to most clothes.

Skechers Flex Advantage

With the good grip and high comfort level, I have a piece of mind when the kids wear Skechers shoes for sports and play. You bet that from now on, Skechers would be our top favourite for comfort shoes. And we are going to wear them to our next family run event, Shape Run 2017!

Skechers Family

Back to Yishun Park Playground, here is the address if you are wondering how to reach here:

Address – Yishun Central, Yishun Avenue 11, 769027

Yishun Park is a 14-hectare park in Yishun, Singapore bounded by Yishun Ave 4, Yishun Central, Yishun Ave 11 and Yishun Ring Road. It is within the vicinity of Northland Primary School and Safra Yishun Country Club.

Disclaimer: We were sponsored Skechers shoes for a review on our experience. I am certainly a Skechers convert for comfort shoes after this review!

How We Prepare For PSLE Prelims

PSLE Prelims is scheduled to be on the first week of August in Missy’s school. With only 5 weeks left after the June holidays, I sat with Missy to plan out a revision schedule. This is how we do it.

PSLE Prelims is scheduled to be on the first week of August in Missy’s school. With only 5 weeks left after the June holidays, I sat with Missy to plan out a revision schedule. This is how we do it.

Importance To Plan Together

When kids were young, it was easy to plan out a routine schedule and carried it out. But when kids grow up, we need to ensure that we plan out schedule with them so that they are aware, in agreement and committed to stick by the schedule independently.

Knowing the Subjects and Topics to be Tested

This applies to all levels, the knowledge of what are to be tested and ensure the child knows! In Prelims, there is no need to check it out, every topic from P1 to P6 will be tested. I find that only the Science subject has the heaviest revision topics from P3 to P6. Apart from that, Math is built up on basic topics and earlier topics in P1-P4, although important, are not heavily tested and usually appeared in Section A MCQ portion. For Chinese, the vocabulary words may be more skewed towards P5 and P6, not to say that P1-P4 work is insignificant, it is equally important too.

Separate the Subjects into Different Segments and Revision

It is important to break the revision and past year paper practices into clear segments. This is akin to practising piano pieces whereby the problem music phrases require target practices over and over again. Likewise, if we can divide the subjects into segments, we will be doing target practices for each segment to master them one by one. How do we do so?

a) Science

Science has 2 sections to its paper – MCQ and OEQ (Open Ended Question)

Section A MCQ – 56 marks
Section B OEQ – 44 marks

MCQ for Science should not be neglected as it carries a total of 56 marks (28 questions), which is more than half the passing marks! If one were to do well for this section, there will be no question about passing the paper.

If you had followed my post on PSLE Science Workshop by Marshall Cavendish, we have learnt to do target practices by:

– targeting 20 RIGHT Questions in 20 minutes for MCQ Section
– targeting 20 Marks in 20 minutes by choosing any questions that the child is comfortable and good in for OEQ Section. This way of choosing questions to target 20 marks is to be used only during practices and not during examinations unless your child prefers this strategy.

Our Science Revision Materials:

Science Guide Book
Science Journal (Missy’s own Science note-taking)
Top School Science Papers
Science Assessment by topics
School Science Worksheets and File (learn mistakes)

b) Math

Math Paper 1 usually tests on basic Math concepts that may be taught in P1 to P4.
Math Paper 2 consists of short and long “killer questions” that are more focused on P5-P6 topics.
Paper 1 – 40 marks
Paper 2 – 60 marks

It is important to ensure Paper 1 to be practised to near perfection as students tend to lose marks in Paper 2 long questions. We are working towards ensuring Missy gains confidence and knows the topics that tend to come out in Paper 1 well, which can be really basics like decimal place value, arranging fractions from smallest to biggest, rounding off, conversion of units, etc.

There are some standard Math topics that will come out in the long questions, like equivalent fractions, multiple fractions, percentage, ratio, groupings, geometry, volume, etc. We target to master Paper 1 and Paper 2 short questions before we focus much on Paper 2 long questions. It really depends on individual child’s ability on strategising Math revision.

Our Math Revision Materials:

Top School Math Papers
School Worksheets and File (learn mistakes)

c) English

Booklet A – 28 marks (Grammar, Vocabulary, Visual Text Comprehension)
Booklet B – 67 marks (Form Filling, Editing, Comprehension Cloze, Synthesis & Transformation, Comprehension)

It is easier to do target practices for English since all the segments are clearly distinguished from each other. We planned for target practices using Top School Papers to drill the same segment for multiple papers. We also used Synthesis & Transformation assessment book for useful reference. We constantly refer to the English Grammar Guide Book too. How do we tackle the English Paper? Click here and here to read my previous sharing and the guide books we are using.

Our English Revision Materials:

Top School English Papers
School Worksheets and File (learn mistakes)

d) Chinese

For Chinese, our way of revision is to drill 汉字 and give 听写. Missy practises on Top School Papers and revise her textbook passages to remind her of good sentence structures that can be useful for Compositions.

Our Chinese Revision Materials:

Top School Chinese Papers>
School Worksheets and File (learn mistakes)

The Timetable

We considered a few important factors. We marked holidays, days that Missy returns late from school, weekends engagement, how heavy the revision is for that day, etc.

It is also important not to be overly ambitious to complete a fixed number of Papers / Revision Topics and be F.L.E.X.I.B.L.E when implementing the timetable!

We decided to break the Top School Papers into Paper 1 and Paper 2 to be completed on different days. The reason is to dilute the heaviness of each Subject across different days to ensure maximum absorbance of knowledge and focus. We usually mix Math and English, Science and English revision on weekdays.

When I come back from work, I will mark the papers that she does for that day and go through each and every question, be it correct or wrong, with her. This is important to capture her freshest memory of the question on the same day, if not, the next day at most. Going through the correct questions give her a chance to clarify uncertain concepts and ask me questions. I can spot her weaknesses and strengths and focus accordingly.

On weekends, we have slightly more time and Missy can do one full paper and time her speed. I leave her alone to revise Chinese and test her on 汉字.

Nearer the Prelims, we dedicate the weekends to study School Worksheets and mistakes. I kept her P3 to P5 Math and Science Worksheets and it is good to go through them and refresh her memory.

On the day before examinations, we usually revise School Worksheets again by selecting the topics that need re-look.

Everyone has his/her style of revision that may be different from ours. Our revision plan is purely calibrated for Missy and may or may not work for your child. Nevertheless, I am happy to share our way of revision and hope you will find something useful to apply on your child’s revision plan. I am also responding to many parents who have been asking how we plan our revision by writing this blog post. I welcome strategies and advice from you so that I can also learn a trick or 2 for preparation for PSLE and for my subsequent kids 🙂

Eye Level Centre – Our Verdict on the English Lessons

Attending Eye Level English classes is really the very first time that my kids are exposed to an academic enrichment centre. Because of the “taste” of chance to spend time for extra-curricular academic assistance, they gain much in terms of knowledge as well as appreciate their freedom of no tuition. But having said that, 2 months after our last lesson at Eye Level, my kids still talk fondly of Teacher Jdrea and her lessons. They even told me that they do not mind continuing the lessons after the sponsorship! I certainly did not expect that! I guess that speaks volume for their experience with Eye Level!

What we like about Eye Level English Lessons

Independence

I believe when a child takes charge of his own learning, he will be responsible for the consequences of his efforts. I truly think that hand-holding for learning cannot achieve much and will cause more harm than good in the long run. The last thing I want to hear from any of my kids is that they are working hard for ME than for themselves!

I like that Eye Level trains the students to be independent even from small details like taking their own homework from the shelf to giving the students an “air-time” for one-to-one consultation to clarify what they do not know with the teacher. The best part of it is the full attention dedicated to the student during the one-one teaching. This, perhaps, constitutes a great part of success in Eye Level curriculum.

Duration

The duration of the lessons is well-timed to allow students to focus at best within 45 minutes. Even though it may seem short compared to other enrichment centres, slow and steady wins the race in the long run. You cannot force to cramp knowledge by extending excessive hours beyond what the students can absorb. Thus, the duration is just right.

Drilling on Comprehension

Eye Level English

Yes, my kids complain on the numerous Comprehension practices during lessons and homework. I am totally with Eye Level that Comprehension practices are much to be appreciated in terms of training understanding, exposure to a bigger word bank, getting used to Grammar and sentence structures, etc. Painful as it may be, exposing to more Comprehension passages help in the long run.

However, Comprehension practices are not all there is in the curriculum. There are much more learning in the basics of English, like Quotation marks, Capitalisation, Tenses, etc that may seem trivial at Level 5 and 6 but totally helpful to correct previous inherited mistakes.

Learning at Own Pace

Eye Level English learning

In my opinion, the allowance for students to learn at their own pace is paramount. The reason that many fall behind in normal school hours is because lessons are conducted to a class of varying learning abilities and intellectuals. If a child were to send to an enrichment class and similarly fall behind in the class pace again, this child will be deprived of proper learning and a chance to grasp fundamental concepts.

Eye Level curriculum tackles this aspect very well. The teachers cater to the learning pace of each individual student, allowing them to advance only when they have mastered learning concepts and are comfortable to move up. So, if you are a Kiasu parent who is looking towards a fast pace teaching, then Eye Level will not be a suitable option. Like I mentioned, “Slow and Steady wins the race”. Learning takes time, and mastering takes even more time.

Little Gesture Motivates

Eye Level English Workbook

Another thing I like about Eye Level is more on Teacher Jdrea, whose practices I hope, are a representation of all Eye Level teachers. Instead of marking a cross on wrong answers, she put a circle instead. This serves as an encouragement to students in their learning journey. This may seem to you an insignificant thing, but I see it as an important gesture to boost a child’s confidence and motivates him/her. A cross, to me, especially when it is drawn in exaggerated dimensions, can be intimidating and demoralising. I certainly would not like my boss to draw crosses on my proposal when I present to him. What’s more, a child.

Feedback

As mentioned in my first post, I love the feedback given by Teacher Jdrea at the end of each lesson. Parents and Teachers should work hand in hand to complement each other in terms of educating a child. With that, I greatly appreciate that parents are given feedback on their children’s weaknesses and strengths. That helps me in identifying and focusing on the necessary areas of weakness.

American English

After singing so many praises of Eye Level, one thing I am not so in favour of is the American English that Eye Level is using for their English curriculum. As Eye Level originates from Korea, their books and lessons are all taught in American English. This is opposed to Singapore’s English which uses British English. As a result, I was afraid that my kids would be confused between the two. Schools do not allow American English to be used in examinations. Hence, I put up a request to Teacher Jdrea that whenever she comes across a part of the English language that uses American English, to explain to my kids the equivalent in British English. She was kind enough to accommodate to this request.

Soon, I found out that perhaps my fears were unfounded. My kids seemed to be able to differentiate between American and British English without difficulties. It could even be a plus point, like what Teacher JDrea said, for them to be exposed and know the difference between the two. After all, kids, by nature, are excellent in adapting to changes and differences.

Then, I was told a GOOD NEWS! Daekyo, the parent company in South Korea, is in the midst of reviewing the syllabus to replace the American English Curriculum with British English Curriculum! More details will be out as soon as they have firmed it up! That means my only concern on Eye Level English Class will be eliminated!

I have written our verdict on Eye Level English Curriculum, now is a chance for your child to experience for himself/herself!
