Simple baking with the kids – New York Cheesecake

I have found a great recipe for New York Cheesecake on allrecipes.com!

The texture is creamy and the kids totally love it! The reviews on this recipe actually rated it as THE BEST NEW YORK CHEESECAKE. I am not an expert in judging cheesecakes but seems like it is indeed very popular. I have baked 2 times so far with the same recipe. The second time was baked for Master 3’s 3rd birthday and we decorated and drew a car for him!

Previously, I had made many No-baked cheesecakes as I did not have an oven back then. No-baked cheesecakes taste yummy too, but I find the cheese taste in no-baked version much heavier than baked ones. You can find out more on my Yogurt cheesecake recipe here, which is also a favourite with my children.

Baking with kids – Easy Peasy Butter Cookies

I always make a point to do some kitchen activities with the children during school holidays, like the time when I taught them to cook from young in simple dishes. I will do it more frequent with the kids but you know, there is limited energy after work and weekends are usually outdoors. And over one long weekend 2 weeks ago, I decided to do a first time baking for myself and first time baking with the kids.

I never had an oven. And one wrong concept is I thought that oven has to be in-built which we did not have it when we moved to this house, and portable ovens are too expensive for my limited baking. Then a close girl friend told me that ovens nowadays are very affordable and it is worth a small investment just to have fun baking with the children. So, I went to scout for one cheap oven and this oven cost me less than $100!

Teach your children to cook from young

When does one learn to cook? Just before getting married with a crash course of mum’s cooking? Or after married when pressured to fulfil a dutiful wife’s role to cook for your other half?

For me, I started frying an egg at age 11 and after that, a few impromptu spaghetti and instant noodles here and there. It was really only after my 3rd newborn when I had a short SAHM period of 5 mths maternity leave was I able to proclaim myself as “able to cook”. For those months, I DID cook 3 dishes plus a soup every single day! Yes, it’s late I know. Better late than never. Hence, I decided that my kids shall start early. I feel that age 7 is an ideal age to start cooking a dish from start of preparation, using knife to chop garlic, etc, to cooking over a stove fire.
